The “white leaf olive”, as its Spanish name suggests, is one of the few olive varieties that can be identified relatively easily thanks to its distinctive leaves.
It shares the podium for Spanish olive export hits together with the varieties “Picual” and “Arbequina” and has been cultivated in plantations for oil production for hundreds of years. A large proportion of what we affectionately call “hardware store trees” come from this DNA. Hojiblanca produces beautiful fruits without any pollinator tree and its pretty leaves make it perfect as a terrace olive tree - because, contrary to many claims, this variety is one of the more sensitive among the frost-hardy ones. From -12°C the tree should be at least close to the protected house wall.
