When we decide to plant a new olive variety in Austria, we first look at the theory. Where does this variety mainly grow and what is the soil and climate like there?
You quickly end up in Croatia, small Italian valleys and northern Spanish provinces – like in this case Aragon.
Empeltre is mainly planted in the northernmost province of Spain and has survived one or two harsh winters there over the decades.
Since we have been researching and working with olives since 2016, we have found that each of our varieties develops differently well in different regions. Therefore, for the first time, we are offering the opportunity to plant a variety that is completely unknown in Austria and to be part of the research live.
Empeltre is Catalan and means something like “implant”, which refers to the difficulty of rooting the cuttings – therefore most of these trees are grafted onto a wild rootstock by the nurseries – ours are not – they are root-true.
For the most part self-compatible - but we always recommend planting several varieties, also in the interests of science and diversity.
